In his New Year’s Mass, Pope Francis spoke out against all forms of violence against women.
In sunny weather, Francis spoke to the crowd in St. Peter’s Square from the window of the Papal Palace.
Mothers “know how to overcome obstacles and differences of opinion and make peace,” said the head of the Catholic Church on Saturday in St. Peter’s Basilica in his sermon on the solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God.
Women know how to hold the different threads of life together, said the pontiff. “We need people who are able to weave the threads of community instead of the barbed wire of conflict and division.” Mothers brought the world to life. The Pope called on efforts to promote mothers and the protection of women to be stepped up.
Francis equated violence against women with an insult to God. «How much violence is directed against women! Enough! To hurt a woman is to offend God, who has accepted our humanity from a woman, “said the Pope, referring to the Christian belief that Jesus was the Son of God.
In a tweet before the New Year service, Francis outlined his hope and strategy for peace. “Everyone can work together to create a more peaceful world, from people’s hearts and family relationships to society and the environment to relationships between peoples and nations,” tweeted Francis.
With the exception of the Pope and the members of a choir, which consisted of boys and adults, the participants in the mass wore face protection as part of the Corona measures.
