Popular primary: who are the seven successful candidates?


Less than three months before the presidential election, the citizen collective La Primaire populaire will organize from January 27 a “popular nomination” in order to appoint a left-wing candidate. Seven names were selected, including those of Anne Hidalgo, Yannick Jadot, Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Christiane Taubira. Among others.

Here are the portraits of the seven candidates who will be put to the vote. These are presented in alphabetical order.

Anna Agueb Porterie

Aged 24, Anna Agueb-Porterie is an unlabeled environmental activist. Co-founder of “Notre Maison Brûle”, she is the youngest of the personalities acclaimed to embody the common candidacy of the left.

Anne Hidalgo

Aged 62, Anne Hidalgo was invested by the Socialist Party (PS) on October 14. Favorable to the popular Primary, the current mayor of Paris had launched an appeal for the rally of the left at the beginning of December, before backtracking since his proposal had been rejected by his main competitors Yannick Jadot (EELV), Jean-Luc Mélenchon ( LFI) and Fabien Roussel (PCF).

Yannick Jadot

Yannick Jadot (54) is the candidate of the ecologists (EELV) for the presidency, after his victory in the primary on September 28, against Sandrine Rousseau. From the beginning, the MEP had refused to participate in a primary of the left.

Pierre Larrouturou

Aged 57, Pierre Larrouturou is an MEP and founder of Nouvelle Donne. He announced his candidacy on July 7 as part of La Primaire populaire. In early January, he went on a hunger strike with eleven other activists to urge left-wing candidates to unite.

Charlotte Merchandise

Aged 47, Charlotte Marchandise agreed to participate in the popular primary on September 29. As a reminder, the former deputy mayor (PS) of Rennes had won the primary citizen during the previous election of 2017, without however managing to collect the 500 sponsorships necessary to present herself.

Jean-Luc Melenchon

Aged 70, Jean-Luc Mélenchon is the leader of the party La France insoumise (LFI). Candidate since November 8, 2020, he also opposed participating in the primary of the left. Like the EELV candidate Yannick Jadot.

Christiane Taubira
