The so-called “baggage wrapping” is a service offered by many airports. Passengers have the option of having their suitcases wrapped in plastic for a fee. This has its advantages – but there are also some arguments against it.
You may have seen it at the airport: Some passengers have their luggage wrapped in plastic before the suitcase is checked in. However, the “baggage wrapping” is not for nothing. Travelers can use the service for between 10 and 20 euros, depending on the size and type of luggage. But what’s the point?
Protection against contraband and theft
The film primarily serves as protection; on the one hand from thieves who may be after your belongings. On the other hand, no illegal smuggled goods can get into the suitcase, through which one may unconsciously and involuntarily become a drug dealer.
The “luggage wrapping” should also offer additional protection for the suitcase. This way the piece of luggage cannot burst open and is protected from scratches and rain. However, the film can also cause problems.
Wrap suitcases in foil: what speaks against it
Before you next fly on vacation and want to use the foil service at the airport, you should also deal with the associated risks.
In addition to being harmful to the environment, “baggage wrapping” is also problematic for the following reasons:
- The ends of the film can get caught on the baggage carousel and cause delays.
- There may be problems with baggage screening.
- In an emergency, the authorities must be able to open the bag as quickly as possible.
If there are disruptions, those responsible may simply cut open the suitcase. Damage may occur.
Here’s how you can protect your luggage instead
To prevent the suitcase from bursting open, it is best to use suitable suitcase straps. You can use these again and again.
To protect against theft, you can also use the case lock, which is often already integrated in modern cases. Otherwise suitable separate suitcase lockswhich only you and customs can open.
If your suitcase broke on vacation, it certainly makes sense to have it wrapped in foil for the return flight. Normally, however, you can ensure a high level of security yourself without a film by paying attention to security features when purchasing the suitcase, not overloading the suitcase when using it and using suitcase locks.
