Porn on Twitter: the insoluble problem of bots resurfaces

Bots promoting pornographic content have been on the rise lately on Twitter.

After taking over the social network, Elon Musk made the evacuation of pernicious bots one of his priorities. A goal very far from having been achieved, given the resurgence of these programs, which post adult content everywhere.

Bots that swarm

Since the explosion of crypto-currencies, it was not uncommon to observe in any Twitter thread the intervention of a bot promoting a project or offering free cryptos. If these are already quite annoying spams, the blue bird has also had to struggle lately with a much more painful type of bot, which has already drawn the wrath of the authorities in the past: porn bots .

Indeed, security researchers have spotted for nearly a week an increase in these bots, which initiate contact with users by liking their tweets or responding to them. The objective is thus to reach out to this public so that it interacts with the bot’s page, where links to pornographic content are then offered.

Twitter has (for the moment) no solution

At this time, Twitter can only delete bot accounts on the fly. The social network has yet to offer a more comprehensive solution that can handle spam and bots before they post. Elon Musk had however promised a year ago: “ If our offer on Twitter is successful, we will beat the spambots or die trying! »

The blue bird is also currently experiencing other problems, with reading restrictions imposed on users in order to deal with the excessive use of their data by third parties. The management and Elon Musk seem to make this issue the priority of the moment for the social network. What to relegate the problems of porn bots to the background and let them persist?
