Porsche and Audi recall thousands of electric cars over fire risk

Porsche and Audi have just issued a voluntary recall in the United States for several electric models in their respective ranges. The cause was a sealing problem with a sealant used on the high voltage battery. As a result, the risks of liquid intrusion increase, as do the risks of fire.

After Nissan, which recalled a million electric vehicles in July for a serious engine problem, it is the turn of Porsche and Audi to make a similar decision. Indeed, we have just learned that the two brands, owned by the Volkswagen group, are coming to issue a voluntary recall in the United States.

In question, the use ofsealant not strong enough on the high voltage battery, which could lead to liquid intrusion and by extension fires. Several models from the two manufacturers’ electric ranges are affected. We find in particular:

  • Porsche Taycan
  • Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo
  • Porsche Taycan 4S
  • Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo
  • Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo
  • Porsche Taycan GTS
  • Porsche Taycan GTA Sport Turismo
  • Porsche Taycan Turbo
  • Porsche Taycan Turbo S
  • Porsche Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo
  • Audi e-tron GT
  • Audi RS e-tron GT

Porsche and Audi recall 7,000 cars

In total, this recall concerns no less than 7,000 electric vehicles (1,899 Audis and 4,777 Porsches). As specified in the safety report issued by the NHTSA, the American federal agency responsible for road safety, owners are invited to go to a dealership to carry out a battery check. If a leak is detected, the battery will be replaced completely and free of charge.

According to the two manufacturers, only 3% of recalled cars likely to be affected by a leak. For safety reasons, all vehicles will be tested as mentioned above. Still according to the NHTSA, Porsche has started using Teroson sealant in its production process for Taycan batteries since September 2022. The aim is precisely to strengthen the waterproofing of the batteries.

However, the German brand began to receive several reports in March 2023 attesting to a lack of waterproofing of the Teroson sealant on several vehicles sold on American soil and abroad. Porsche and Audi assure that no incidents have been caused by this problem and add in passing that this recall was triggered as a safety measure. In short, prevention is better than cure. For the moment, we do not yet know if models sold on the French market are likely to be affected by the same problem.
