Porsche turns up the heat – New Taycan: range up, lap time down

The Porsche Taycan was one of the coolest electric cars ever from the start, and 150,000 units have now been sold. The only problem is that the range is no longer up to date and there are also faster options at the Nürburgring. But they improved in Weissach, in both disciplines.

The extensively revised Taycan will soon come onto the market. Technical data are not being revealed at the moment, but at least a Nordschleife time and a range achieved in Californian traffic. Initial test drives between Los Angeles and San Diego revealed a total range of up to for the new generation of the sporty sedan (with new cell chemistry in the battery). to 587 kilometers. Twelve international media representatives traveled in four Taycans over three days on Interstate Highways 405 and 5 between Los Angeles and San Diego. The teams drove at the maximum speed allowed on interstates of 75 mph. This corresponds to around 120 km/h. All four test cars were equipped with the larger Performance Battery Plus. Charging was carried out at Electrify America in Torrence/Los Angeles. Here the Taycan demonstrated more than 300 kW charging power over several minutes and was able to be charged repeatedly from ten to 80 percent state of charge in under 20 minutes. In some cases, charging from 7 to 80 percent only took 16 minutes. Taycan outclasses Tesla on the Nordschleife With a different model variant of the new Taycan, Porsche development driver Lars Kern not only outdid himself at the Nürburgring, but also the Tesla Model S Plaid with performance Package: With a pre-production car, he lapped the Nordschleife in just 7:07.55 minutes. With this official lap time, he was 26 seconds faster than his last record run in August 2022 with a Taycan Turbo S Sport Sedan with Performance Package. The previous record time for four-door electric cars – set by the Tesla Model S Plaid – was beaten by 17.681 seconds. Even the electric hyper-athlete Rimac Nevera didn’t maintain a big lead: at 7:05.298, he was only a good two seconds faster than the Porsche. But they don’t seem to be able to catch up: “I pushed as hard as I could, but that was all I could do,” says Lars Kern. After all, he achieved almost the same time in several attempts. Compared to the 2022 record in a Taycan Turbo S, the times are significantly better: when driving to Schwedenkreuz, the pre-production car is a good 25 km/h faster. When the test driver crossed the finish line in the area of grandstand 13 that day, he had just passed the entrance to the Nordschleife and just before the Antoniusbuche section of the track during the record run of 2022 with the Taycan Turbo S. The distance between the pre-production car and the current Turbo S is over 1.3 kilometers. There is now speculation about the drive. Three engines and over 1000 hp are assumed. And the new Macan’s silicon carbide inverters. And the model name is Taycan Turbo GT.
