Destini Crane (13) is likely to be disfigured for the rest of her life. The girl from Portland, USA has burns on her face, neck, head and torso. She had inflicted the injuries to herself – when she tried to re-enact a viral video from the social networks.
Destini is said to have discovered the clip on the TikTok platform, her mother Kimberly Crane tells the broadcaster ABC. You can see how someone draws a shape on a mirror with a flammable liquid and then sets it on fire.
So on May 13th, Destini takes a bottle of rubbing alcohol, a candle, and a lighter into the bathroom of her family’s home. “Suddenly I heard her scream,” recalls the mother.
Tiktok app was still open
When she entered the bathroom, everything was already on fire. So does her daughter. The TikTok app was still open on their cell phone and recorded.
She took Destini outside and took off her burning T-shirt, said Kimberly Crane. An ambulance finally takes the teenager to the hospital. Since then she has been in the intensive care unit.
The video on TikTok that Destini tried to mimic apparently had no warning. “The users who upload things like this do not understand that children simply imitate such things – and then get hurt,” criticizes Crane.
Tiktok distances itself
But the mother also reproaches herself: «Children shouldn’t be left alone with social media. I wasn’t interested enough if she wanted to show me videos on TikTok. ”
TikTok writes in a statement that uploading videos of dangerous actions that could harm others violates the usage guidelines.
Several transplants and a long rehabilitation are still to come. Kimberly Crane tries to be optimistic: “Destini is strong enough to survive this.” (hah)
