At a media conference, SBB informed about the preparations for a possible power shortage in the winter months.
This was as part of the presentation of the company’s half-year figures, where a loss of CHF 142 million was recorded.
SBB trains run on 90 percent electricity from their own hydroelectric power plants. The rest is covered with nuclear power.
In order for the SBB to be able to generate its own electricity in a shortage, “it is currently keeping its reservoirs filled as much as possible,” she explained. You now have to make purchases at “very high” prices.
Another measure is to heat less. This should reduce gas requirements by ten percent.
