Post-riot reconstruction: Marine Le Pen will not vote for the bill

The deputies of the National Rally will not vote for the emergency bill for reconstruction work after the recent urban violence, described as “a real shame” by their president Marine Le Pen. “This is the one and only response to the riots” following the death of young Nahel, killed by the shooting of a policeman during a road check in Nanterre on June 27, lamented the former candidate for the Élysée during a press conference.

“We no longer support, like millions of French people, that these riots are treated as a natural disaster”. “It is the authors who must pay, if necessary until the end of their days”, she pleaded. While as it stands, the costs of these reconstructions will “inevitably be passed on to future insurance premiums, or to taxpayers”, which is “unacceptable”, denounces Marine Le Pen.

“Restore the rule of law”

The bill, adopted unanimously by the Senate on Tuesday, will be examined by the National Assembly on Thursday. It should make it possible to speed up the reconstruction of degraded or destroyed buildings, and does not claim to constitute “a global response” to the riots, according to the government. The boss of the RN group wants to “deal with the substance of a flammable situation”. “These savage hordes have declared a turf war on our institutions and even on France,” she says.

“Restore the rule of law”, restore the means to the police, “reconquer lost territories” and still “affirm national cohesion”: far-right deputies propose a battery of measures for “a start republican”. They include the expulsion of foreign rioters, criminal proceedings against manifestly defaulting parents, the suspension of their family allowances, criminal majority at 16, and even a presumption of self-defense for the police.

“A great political victory for us”

They also propose a plan for verifying the residence permits of HLM occupants. The idea put forward by RN deputy Jean-Philippe Tanguy to restore military service was not retained, due to lack of means. Marine Le Pen welcomed the fact that the right is taking over some of the RN’s proposals, “a great political victory for us”. On the other hand, it crushed the left alliance Nupes which “the vast majority refused the calls for calm”. “The justification for the ransacking of public buildings by elected officials appears to be unworthy and anti-republican”, attacked Marine Le Pen,

The presidential camp regularly places the RN outside the “republican arc”, a criticism it also makes to LFI.
