His big return put everyone in agreement in 2022 in “Prey”: a new Predator film will be shot, still under the direction of director Dan Trachtenberg. The title of this new hunting trip? “Badlands.”
It’s official, 20th Century Studios and director Dan Trachtenberg are once again hunting the Predator: a new film is in preparation!
In 2022, Prey had everyone in agreement. Set in 1719, the film told the story of a young Comanche woman and skilled warrior fighting to protect her tribe from one of the first highly evolved predators to land on Earth.
At its output, Prey had not only broken streaming records for the Hulu platform but also obtained the best reviews in the history of the franchise, which led it directly to the Emmys.
The film was nominated for six awards at the prestigious ceremony, winning Best Sound Editing, a first for the saga that began in 1987 with John McTiernan’s original Predator.
Entitled Badlands, the new feature film will not be a sequel to Prey but a new standalone film featuring a completely new story. While plot details are being kept under wraps, it appears the film will take place in the future.
Dan Trachtenberg (to whom we also owe the excellent science fiction thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane) will therefore direct the film and co-write the screenplay alongside Patrick Aison.
According to Deadline, production on the film is expected to begin next July and would be a high priority for 20th Century Studios and the director who are already reportedly meeting talent for the lead role who, as in Preyshould be feminine.
A sequel to Prey?
Still according to Deadline, it seems that even if the project is still in its early stages, a Prey 2 would still be in the works with Amber Midthunder, the heroine of the first film, potentially returning. If this turns out to be the case, it would be the first time the star of a previous film has returned to reprise their role.
Badlands and this potential Prey 2 would not, however, be the only Predator projects in preparation. The surprise success of Prey having reinvigorated the franchise, the studio would therefore plan a multitude of projects alongside Dan Trachtenberg.
