Presidency of the Republicans: what to expect from the televised debate between the three candidates?

Alexandre Chauveau

Two weeks before the first round of the Congress of Republicans, Aurélien Pradié, Éric Ciotti and Bruno Retailleau are debating this Monday evening on LCI. On the program: 1h45 of exchanges, on the sovereign, the economy and the social, the ecology or the future of the party. This debate is the only one in the entire campaign and could therefore be of decisive importance.

Three men, a position, and a debate. This Monday evening on LCI, Aurélien Pradié, Éric Ciotti and Bruno Retailleau debate two weeks before the first round of the Congress of Republicans. The three candidates are aware of the stakes of this unique meeting. Éric Ciotti is experienced in the exercise after having created the surprise last year during the debates of the primary Les Républicains. He is the favorite this year, a position that is never easy to assume but which he hopes to consolidate by scoring points on themes where he knows he is less expected, such as ecology for example. Monday evening, he will debate against the two other candidates for the presidency of the party on LCI.

Three very different profiles

At his side, Bruno Retailleau, very close ideologically to the Niçois, will seek to impose himself through ideas. The Vendéen, patron of the Republicans in the Senate, claims a project of civilizational order, and has been calling for several years for the ideological renewal of the right. He is thus the one who pleads for the most frank break with Nicolas Sarkozy.

Aurélien Pradié, the one with the most to gain

Finally, Aurélien Pradié, the least known of the three, is the one who has the most to gain tonight. The deputy of Lot should stand out with different positions from his two competitors, on pension reform in particular. Renowned for his outspokenness, he could also animate this 1h45 debate on form. The three candidates will meet at the end of the week at the headquarters of the Republicans, for a hearing before party executives.
