BRASILIA (Reuters) – Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has canceled his trip to China, originally scheduled for March 27-31, for health reasons, the presidential press office said on Saturday.

According to the press service, bacterial and viral bronchopneumonia caused by influenza A was diagnosed and treatment was put in place.

“Despite a clinical improvement, the medical service of the Presidency of the Republic recommends postponing the trip to China until the end of the cycle of viral transmission”, indicates a note from the medical service.

The Brazilian government has informed the Chinese authorities of this postponement and of its intention to reschedule the trip to China.

The trip, which included a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, was seen as an important move by Brazil’s new president, who took office in January, to strengthen relations with Brazil’s biggest trading partner.
