Adrien Quatennens takes stock of Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s presidential race in the morning of Europe 1 weekend. The deputy of La France insoumise evoked the polls which credit the candidate around 10%, but also the sponsorships of the mayors to enter the race for the Élysée.

Three months before the first round of the presidential election, Jean-Luc Mélenchon oscillates between 10% and 13% of voting intentions in the polls. The presidential candidate under the label of La France insoumise is in the middle of the campaign with his program “The popular union for the common future”. Asked at the microphone of Europe 1 this Sunday, the deputy of the North Adrien Quatennens delivered his encouraging perspectives on the validation of the candidacy of Jean-Luc Mélenchon. “We are slowly getting to 400 sponsorship promises and I won’t hide from you that it’s complicated”, revealed Adrien Quatennens to our microphone.

“We have mayors who have a power that they did not ask for, but that the candidates need. And we must launch this solemn appeal and remind the elected officials who would listen to us that sponsoring a candidate in the presidential election does not mean in no way support him politically.”

The “cleaver” of 500 signatures

The MP pleaded for the anonymity of sponsorships. “I want to be very clear on that,” he said. “There are mayors of the Republican right who sponsor us and I thank them because, indeed, there is this ax of 500 signatures. I believe that we would need, for example, to reinstate anonymity since in a lot of municipal councils, elected officials say to themselves, ‘I’m afraid that my sponsorship will be taken for political support.’ Of course it’s not. Otherwise, we would need a system like the one we proposed, with citizen sponsorships.

If elected officials have signed a platform for a union of the left, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, he wishes to go it alone, also claiming to be certain of reaching the second round.
