Presidential: can we make a power of attorney during the in-between rounds?

Presidential Election 2022case

If it is possible to apply for a power of attorney between the two rounds of the presidential election, be careful not to expect too much. You might not be able to vote.

You didn’t vote in the first round and you’re biting your fingers? Have you taken your tickets to go on a goguette on Sunday, April 24? If your only hope to correct the situation in the second round between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen is the power of attorney, do not delay in making your request.

Indeed, if it is legally possible to ask a trusted person to vote in your place until the very day of the vote, the (long) administrative delays are to be taken into account. “You must make the power of attorney as soon as possible, because of the delivery and processing times”, explains the site of the French administration. Indeed, you risk not being able to vote if the town hall does not receive it.

The Maprocuration.gouv website explains that “For your power of attorney to be valid on polling day, you must first go to have your identity checked before an authorized authority. The power of attorney must then be taken into account by your municipality or voting consulate so that the name of your proxy is reported on the attendance list”. In short, waiting for the last days before the second round therefore seems a bit risky. Allowing for a period of two to three days, i.e. making your request before Wednesday, April 20, seems a good precautionary measure.

Note: if you have made a request for the first round but it did not arrive in time for April 10, you can, depending on the validity date chosen, use it for the second round, April 24.
