After a close race between the two candidates, leftist challenger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the presidential election in Brazil.
After counting almost all the voting machines, the incumbent right-wing populist Bolsonaro was lyingat 49.15 percent of the vote, with Lula accounting for 50.85Percent.

A lead for Bolsonaro in the first results was expected, since he had a particularly large number of supporters in those regions where the counting was faster. Accordingly, Bolsonaro’s lead decreased as the count progressed.
The polling stations closed at 9 p.m. Swiss time. Around 120 million citizens were asked to cast their vote using electronic voting machines. Both candidates faced a runoff, as no candidate received more than 50 percent of the votes in the first ballot in early October.
Similar to ex-President Donald Trump in the United States, Bolsonaro has also expressed unproven doubts about the reliability of the voting machines, fueling fears that he might not recognize the result. On election day, police checks on the streets had prompted fears among Lula’s supporters that they would be prevented from voting.
