  • Tens of thousands of people demonstrated in various cities in Mexico for free elections and democracy.
  • In the capital Mexico City, thousands gathered in the central “Zocalo” square.
  • The background to the protests is a planned electoral reform by the government of current President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Many of the people at the demonstrations were dressed in pink, the election authority’s color.

The electoral reform that the government is planning, for example, envisages that the electoral authority will be restructured and reduced. Obrador also wants to have federal judges elected by the people.

The 70-year-old Lopez Obrador is no longer allowed to run in the elections at the beginning of June after six years in office. The candidate from his “Morena Party”, Claudia Sheinbaum, mayor of Mexico City, is clearly leading in the polls. She would be the first woman in Mexico’s history to hold the office of president.
