Ihe environmental candidate for the presidential Yannick Jadot proposed Friday the creation of a status of “climate displaced” for people who must leave their country for environmental reasons, during a hearing by several associations. Asked a week before the first round (April 10) of the presidential election on the notion of “climate refugee”, which does not currently exist in law, Yannick Jadot swept away this option which would require modifying the Geneva Convention governing the refugee status.
“For us, the solution is to have an international convention […] which gives them a status, in particular by having humanitarian visas”, in order to achieve the “recognition of the status of climate-displaced person”, he explained to around twenty associations which work with exiles. The environmentalist candidate pleaded for “transitional protection” which would apply to “entire groups” and not to isolated individuals, as is the case for refugee status.
“There are peoples, especially the inhabitants of the Pacific Islands, who are subject to the phenomenon of the complete loss of habitability of their territory. So the question of their transfer arises, ”he added during this hearing at the Museum of the History of Immigration in Paris. He also said he was “in favor of a tax credit of 200 euros per month” for people who voluntarily host displaced Ukrainians in their homes. “The welcome citizen, united, it’s beautiful”, he launched. But “we must be careful that States do not take advantage of this citizen welcome to privatize this welcome”.
