President’s daughter Malia Obama is shaking up the film business. The Obama scion is showing his own short film at the Sundance Film Festival.

Malia Obama (25) is aiming for a career as a filmmaker. After initial success as part of the writing team for the Amazon series “Bee Swarm”, the older daughter of former US President Barack Obama (62) was able to place her first short film in competition at the renowned Sundance Film Festival. The festival takes place from January 18th to 28th in Park City, Utah.

That’s what “The Heart” is about

“The Heart” is the title of the approximately 18-minute work. The drama is about according to “Hollywood Reporter” about a grieving son who is supposed to fulfill an unusual wish of his late mother. Malia Obama herself explained in accompanying material for her short film, for which she is responsible for the screenplay and direction: “The film is about lost objects and lonely people as well as forgiveness and regret.” She hopes that “The Heart” will make viewers feel “a little less lonely or at least remind them not to forget the people who are.”

Before Sundance, “The Heart” was screened at the Telluride Film Festival and the Chicago International Film Festival – where it won Best Live-Action Short Film. After graduating from Harvard, Barack Obama’s daughter Malia Obama worked as a writer for Donald Glover’s (40) series “Swarm of Bees”, which was nominated for three Emmys and was mentioned at the beginning. Series creator and “Star Wars” star Glover described her writing style on the project as “great” and predicted her a successful future in the film business.
