Pretty chic! – New Skoda Fabia: Everything new, including a new platform

For many years, the Polo, Ibiza and Fabia were more or less interchangeable small car models from the Volkswagen brands VW, Seat and Skoda. But for some years now, Skoda has been condemned to take a special approach, because while the Fabia, which has been built since 2014, was based on a smaller platform mix, the Ibiza and Polo models, newly upgraded for summer 2021, have shared the MQB platform A0 since 2017. Now Skoda is pulling the same and will also be selling the Fabia from summer as a completely new generation based on the MQB-A0 technology that makes the trio more interchangeable.

Accordingly, the new Fabia will be significantly larger. The fourth edition has grown in length to 4.11 meters. The wheelbase and width have also increased significantly, at 2.56 and 1.78 meters, respectively. This also has an effect on the interior, which offers guests more room to develop. The trunk has grown by 50 to 380 liters, if the rear seat back is folded down, it is 1190 liters.

Externally, the similarities to the Seat Ibiza are noticeable, but at the same time attention was paid to different paintwork in several details. The radiator grille, headlights, front apron and a modified play of beads give the Fabia its own look. Above all, the new sheet metal dress makes the Czech look much more modern and noble compared to its predecessor. Especially when it is still wearing the new metallic paintwork Phoenix Orange and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The inside of the Fabia has also been significantly upgraded. The innovations include a heated multifunction sports steering wheel, a heated windscreen, new LED ambient light and the optionally available two-zone automatic air conditioning. The basic version of the Fabia will be available with an analog cockpit including a 3.5-inch info display. Alternatively, the digital instrument cluster is available with a 10.25-inch screen diagonal.

Another display is a touchscreen with a diameter of at least 6.5 inches for the infotainment worlds. If the Bolero radio is ordered, the display grows to 8 inches and the range of functions includes a hands-free system and smartphone connectivity technology Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Amundsen is the name of the top infotainment model with navigation system, 9.2-inch display, online support, hotspot function and voice and gesture control. A 64 GB SSD hard drive offers storage space for the map material, which can be updated online

Up to nine assistance systems in the new Fabia are also up to date. The highlight here is the adaptive cruise control, which regulates up to a maximum of 210 km / h, in cooperation with the lane departure warning system. Both functions in concert are intended to significantly relieve the driver, especially on long motorway journeys. The Fabia can take over the entire steering when parking. The up to 9 airbags also ensure more safety.

There is a choice of five petrol engines with three or four cylinders for the drives. The one-liter units with 65 HP and 80 HP as well as the supercharged 1.0 TSI with 95 HP are offered exclusively with five-speed manual transmission. The maximum speeds are specified at 172, 179 and 195 km / h, the fuel consumption at just over 5 liters. The 1.0 TSI with 110 PS is optionally available with a manual six-speed gearbox or seven-speed DSG, which sprints to 100 km / h in under 10 seconds and reaches a maximum of over 200 km / h. The top engine is the four-cylinder 1.5 TSI with 150 PS, always coupled to a DSG, which allows a sprint in 7.9 seconds and a maximum of 225 km / h. As with the sister models of the group brands, electrification of the drive is currently not planned.
