Preußen Münster Topples Leaders Düsseldorf, Halting Two Streaks

Preußen Münster secured their first home victory in the 2. Bundesliga since their promotion, defeating Fortuna Düsseldorf 1-0 on November 1, 2024, ending Düsseldorf’s impressive unbeaten run. Jano ter Horst scored the decisive goal in the 27th minute, taking advantage of defensive lapses from Fortuna. Despite Düsseldorfer’s ball possession, they struggled to convert chances, with Preußen goalkeeper Johannes Schenk making crucial saves. Münster’s coach praised the deserving triumph, while Düsseldorf’s players reflected on their shortcomings ahead of their next match against Paderborn.

For the first time since their promotion, Preußen Münster has clinched a home victory in the 2. Bundesliga, ending Fortuna Düsseldorf’s successful run. The 1:0 (1:0) win on Friday evening (November 1, 2024) marked the first away match that the high-flying Düsseldorf team failed to win in their last six outings.

Jano ter Horst (27th minute) was the hero who brought joy to his team and the Preußenstadion by securing the first home win since their return to the second division. Although the league leaders from Düsseldorf dominated large portions of the match, it was the Westphalians who created the more dangerous opportunities.

The Düsseldorf defense contributed to their downfall as well. During the 0:1 goal, the center-back allowed right-back ter Horst to slip by unnoticed, allowing him to head in a cross from Nemeth unchallenged from five meters out. Münster also almost doubled their lead with a breakaway by Yassine Bouchama, who raced towards goal after a long ball as the Düsseldorfer defense failed to regroup. Only Fortuna goalkeeper Florian Kastenmaier prevented an early second goal (47th minute).

Preußen goalkeeper Schenk makes stunning saves

Düsseldorf, now with three losses in their last four matches, struggled to capitalize on their possession. A shot from Felix Klaus from the right came straight to Preußen keeper Johannes Schenk (17th minute), while Vincent Vermej (32nd minute) narrowly missed with a header. The biggest chance was thwarted spectacularly by Schenk, who managed to deflect a close-range shot from Fortuna captain André Hoffmann after a free-kick (43rd minute).

In the second half, Daniel Thioune’s team aimed to increase their pressure, but Münster defended fiercely and continued to create better scoring chances. Bouchama had another opportunity from close range following a rebound from a Makridis shot (69th minute). Despite some frantic moments in front of the Preußen goal late in the game, Münster truly earned their victory. With ten points, the Westphalians gained some breathing room in the relegation zone, while Düsseldorf (20 points) might lose their lead at the top of the table this weekend.

Münster’s coach Hildmann: ‘It was very much deserved’

“A great weight has been lifted off my heart,” said Münster’s coach Sascha Hildmann after the match. “But it was also very much deserved. We’ve improved defensively in the last two games, and we showed that again today.” “Losses are always painful,” commented Düsseldorf’s Hoffmann at the microphone, “and we have to admit that we deserved to lose this match. If I had scored, it would have been very important. But overall, we didn’t offer enough today.”

His coach, Daniel Thioune, expressed his dissatisfaction: “These are frowning wrinkles on my forehead. Right from the start, we didn’t find the intensity needed to harm the opponent. We had around 30 crosses and double-digit corner kicks, but not much of it was dangerous.”

In their next match on November 10, 2024, at 1:30 PM, Preußen Münster will take on Karlsruher SC. Meanwhile, Fortuna Düsseldorf will host SC Paderborn the day before in a top Saturday evening clash at 8:30 PM.
