Although the case seems to be solved, Commissario Brunetti (Uwe Kockisch) has doubts about this simple explanation. The background to the crime is too contradictory. When the public prosecutor prohibits the autopsy, Paola (Julia Jäger) gives a false statement to enable her husband to conduct further investigations.

On her 18th birthday, Joni (Mia Wasikowska) and her half-brother Laser (Josh Hutcherson) begin the search for their biological father (Mark Ruffalo). When they find their laid-back and unconventional father and introduce him to their mothers, their previously harmonious family life falls apart.
