PREVIEW Triangle Strategy: a future tactical ogre?

Now you should knowNintendo announced that a demo Prologue of Triangle Strategythe next tactical role-playing game from Square-Enix developped by Artdink under the supervision of producer Tomoya Asano (Bravely Default, Octopath Traveler), allows you to play at the beginning of the adventure. Well, we were also able to discover this content on the final version, the opportunity to share with you our first feeling from some of the available elements. We will therefore not go into too much detail, reserving ourselves for our full verdict.

A future great Switch TRPG.

To begin with, and it will have escaped no one, Triangle Strategy sports an aesthetic that the publisher likes to decline, HD-2D, mixing 3D for environments with pixel art in 2D for once again a very convincing result. Despite this “minimalist” aspect in a certain sense, the game is packed with fine details and animations that bring the on-screen characters and locations to life. On the screen of the Switch OLED, it turns like a charm, we are really excited by what we have in front of us. Our ears are also delighted, with a soundtrack with great potential which corresponds to what we expect from a fantasy universe and high quality Japanese dubbing (to be changed in the options even before starting a game).

Regarding his universe, it’s a lore very rich and complex which is served to us on a plattertaking us to the land of Norzeliadivided into three kingdoms (Glenbrook, Aesfrost and Hyzante) having a stormy past in common due to a war for the two main resources of this world: salt and iron. A real geopolitical conflict in good order with a diverse cast. The plot begins when the young heir of the house Wolffort, Serenoris about to meet his bride Frederica, a political marriage having been arranged. Clearly, if you don’t like long exposure scenes and being overwhelmed with details, this title isn’t for you. Through an interactive map, we can access the main scenes that directly advance the plot and other secondary scenes that can be skipped, but it would be a shame to deprive ourselves of it. Some of these scenes involving Serenor havea mechanic of choice based on the Beliefs according to three parameters which are ethics, pragmatism and freedom. We therefore have to decide on certain interventions without really knowing what their scope will be. This promises future cases of conscience and good replayability, in addition to strengthening our involvement.

Triangle Strategy preview 01 10 02 2022But in addition to endless dialogues, the heart of the gameplayThose are its turn-based tactical confrontations, where each unit’s action order is displayed. From the first fight, you will quickly understand that it will take take into account multiple parameters to hope to emerge alive from the conflict. We’ll spare you the basics on shot placement and range, but what sets Triangle Strategy other titles such as Fire Emblemit is in particular the fact that the elevation of a unit also affects the damage, as well as the direction in which we leave it at the end of each round. Indeed, if we or the enemy attack behind a character’s back, the attack will hurt much more. On the same principal, we can take an opponent in a pincer movement by placing units on the adjacent squares, our ally then dealing a bonus blow when we take action. Navigating the game grid isn’t super instinctive at first, but it’s a hit. Each character is otherwise unique with its own techniques, although quite limited for the moment, to be seen later. And that the novices are reassured, the difficulty goes from Very easy at Difficultso if the story is more important to you than the tactical conflicts, you can still enjoy it. Surprisingly, the balance between dialogues and battles does not yet tip in favor of the latter in terms of time in front of our screento see on the length.

Finally, in addition to the phases of pure dialogue and confrontations, so-called investigative sequences allow otherwise to give us a little freedom by controlling Serenor, the opportunity to recover a few objects, chat with the villagers and other joys that we find in more traditional role-playing games, with all the same dialogue choices available to us (who would have thought that talking about hide-and-seek with a kid would become a dilemma?). And it is around a balance that certain crucial decisions will be made, changing more radically the face of our gaming experience.

Our first impressions: Good!

Our first steps into the world of Triangle Strategy pleasantly surprised us mixing all the ingredients to make it a future great TRPG of the Switch. On the other hand, it targets a very specific audience adept at political intrigues with extensive ramifications and not having the desire to cross swords, which could dirty more than one, you are warned.

You can pre-order Triangle Strategy on Amazon for €50.99.
