Price dispute with manufacturers: Rewe throws products out of the range

Price quarrel with manufacturers
Rewe throws products out of the range

Large brand manufacturers are raising prices to compensate for production losses caused by the corona crisis. Rewe doesn't want to participate. Products from the brands Kelloggs, Mars-Wrigley's and Eckes-Granini are therefore flying off the shelves. Red Bull and Coca-Cola are also on the hit list.

In the first phase of the corona pandemic, empty shelves were not uncommon in supermarkets. This bottleneck has long since been overcome. Nevertheless, there is already corona-related loss again. This time, however, there are no delivery problems due to the lockdown, but a conscious decision by a supermarket chain.

According to "Lebensmittel Zeitung", Rewe wants to take items out of the range because manufacturers are sometimes increasing their prices to compensate for production losses caused by Corona. Rewe does not want to participate and is also fighting with major brand manufacturers.

Negotiations are ongoing

Every autumn there are negotiations between markets and manufacturers. This year, however, these may come on the table earlier. Because Rewe is resisting this price increase with all its might.

According to the "Lebensmittel Zeitung" newspaper, Rewe customers will therefore soon be looking in vain for products from the brands "Kelloggs", "Mars-Wrigley's" and "Eckes-Granini" and will have to buy them in another supermarket if necessary. Anyone who reaches into the chewing gum shelf at the checkout will definitely find a much smaller range than usual.

And that's not all. Because price negotiations are also ongoing with the Red Bull, Coca-Cola and Iglo brands – there should also be a dispute between manufacturers and Rewe here. With the products of these brands, however, according to "Lebensmittel Zeitung", the dispute is not yet so far that products are banned from the market. How the dispute over prices will end will be revealed at the latest at the official negotiations in autumn. Then it will also be clear which products Rewe is permanently removing from its shelves.
