  • Despite the ban on Pride Month events in Turkey, activists took to the streets of Istanbul to protest discrimination against trans people.
  • The police broke up the protest march. The activist association Kaos GL spoke of police attacks on the demonstrators.

Despite all the bans, numerous activists gathered on Sunday for a “Trans Pride Parade” in Istanbul. They wanted to demonstrate in the central Taksim Square, but were stopped by the police. Metro connections to the square were also interrupted.

The activist association Kaos GL reported police attacks on the demonstrators. Events and demonstrations related to Pride Month were also broken up in other Turkish cities.

The annual Pride month in June serves to make lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer people (LGBTIQ) visible. In Turkey, the events have already been banned in recent years. The Turkish government under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly expressed hostility towards the movement.
