The assailant was quickly arrested by the police. “The suspect ran away“, affirmed a police source in Nice Matin, before adding “The attacker left through the entrance, went around the church, chased by the crews, then entered the church again from behind. The agents then issued the summons. The suspect eventually threw the knife to the ground, got down on one knee and was taken in for questioning.”.

Both victims were taken care of by firefighters. On Twitter, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin reacted to the attack. “An attack took place this morning in a church in Nice. The priest is injured. No vital prognosis involved. Solidarity with the parishioners and thanks to the police who quickly arrested the author. The Prefect is on the spot”did he declare.

According to France 3, the priest, of Polish origin, was hit by a twenties stabbing in the chest. The nun was injured in the hand. For the moment, the motivations of the attacker remain unknown. According to BFMTV, the man would be 31 years old and would suffer from bipolarity. Born in Fréjus, he lived in Nice and was unknown to the police. “He made several stays in psychiatry at the Sainte-Marie hospital“, said the prefect Bernard Gonzalez. The terrorist track is a priori dismissed at this stage. Finally, an investigation for attempted murder and violence with a weapon has been opened.
