The Prime Minister of the British Virgin Islands was arrested on Thursday in Florida and charged with drug trafficking and money laundering, announced the governor of this overseas territory of the United Kingdom.
“It is my duty as Governor to inform you that this morning Prime Minister Andrew Fahie was arrested in Miami on charges relating to the importation of narcotics and money laundering,” the official said. Virgin Islands Governor John Rankin in a statement.
The director of the port services of the British Virgin Islands, Oleanvine Maynard, and the son of the latter, Kadeem Maynard, were also arrested for the same facts, indicated in a press release sent to AFP the head of the American agency anti -drugs (DEA), Anne Milgram.
“Anyone involved in importing dangerous drugs into the United States will be held responsible, regardless of their position,” she said.
An appointment with fake traffickers
The three defendants were arrested at a North Miami airport when they had an appointment with Mexican drug traffickers, in reality DEA undercover agents, who were to give them $700,000 in cash in exchange for their helping to smuggle cocaine from Colombia to Miami and New York, according to court documents cited by the American press.
The British Virgin Islands, which have approximately 35,000 inhabitants, are located east of Puerto Rico and are known to be one of the main tax havens on the planet.
The Caribbean archipelago has an autonomous government, but a governor is appointed by Queen Elizabeth II, on the recommendation of the British government.
