Prime Video: the zombie film that inspired The Walking Dead will leave the platform

The feature film “Zombie” by George A. Romero, considered one of the masterpieces of horror cinema, will soon no longer be available on the Amazon Prime Video platform.

If it happens that the use of the qualifier “masterpiece” is sometimes abusive, we will find on the other hand few people to dispute this status with the film Zombie.

Directed in 1978 by the master of horror George A. Romero, this feature film follows the adventures of a group of survivors of a zombie apocalypse, refugees in the walls of a deserted shopping center.

Zombie is the second installment in Romero’s undead saga, following Night of the Living Dead. Other opuses then emerged: Day of the Living Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead – Chronicle of the Living Dead and finally Survival of the Dead (the filmmaker’s last film, who died in 2017) .

If it is not the first film to have depicted the living dead (one would have to go back to Vaudou by Jacques Tourneur, released in 1943), Zombie is on the other hand the one which theorized the rules of the genre, numbering five :

• Zombies don’t run

• You have to destroy their heads or brains to kill them permanently

• Never get bitten by a zombie

• It is not known why they come back to life

• NEVER say the word “zombie”

Ironically, the French title of Zombie breaks one of these rules, but remember that the original title of the film is Dawn of the Dead, which could literally be translated as Dawn of the Living Dead. This inconsistency with the horrific mythology imagined by Romero is therefore specific to the FR translation of the title.

A major influence on today’s horror cinema

Terrifying and bloody, coupled with an acerbic criticism of American consumer society, Zombie is still considered today as a pillar of horror cinema of the 70s.

The greatest horror filmmakers of today also claim his influence, such as Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead), Zack Snyder (author of a remake, released in France under the title Army of the Dead ) or Robert Rodriguez (Planet Terror).

Zombie also had a major influence on the series The Walking Dead, yet described as “soap opera” by George Romero in 2016, who regretted that the entertaining aspect of the program had become more important than the socio-political dimension of his films.

A tribute was nevertheless paid to him by the production on the occasion of the hundredth episode of the series, broadcast shortly after his death.

The Zombie film will definitely leave the Amazon Prime Video platform catalog on January 31!
