In the big GALA interview, Prince Albert of Monaco speaks more openly than ever about his family in the palace.

Normally, Prince Albert, 65, is rather covered about his private life. In our exclusive interview, he makes an exception and speaks openly about Princess Charlène, 45, and his children.

Together with his wife Charlène, he wants to carefully teach the twins Jacques and Gabriella, both 8, in which centuries-old tradition they stand: “We have already shown them the state apartments and other important rooms, but we don’t tell them to sit down and have to listen to a lecture. They’re supposed to be discovering things for themselves. It helps them get a sense that this isn’t just an official place, it’s also their home.”

And how is it for the mini royals to grow up in such a historic place? “Well, the palace is also a place where we live as a family. There are areas, for example the gardens, where the children can feel completely free and play. It helps them to develop a feeling that this is not is only an official place, but also her home,” reveals the prince, but also emphasizes:

My wife and I do it step by step. […] Little by little they will understand what it all means. And what an incredible legacy we are leaving them.

Like his sisters Caroline and Stéphanie, Albert himself grew up in the palace. “We walked everywhere, it was an adventure for us. For example, I went roller-skating with my sisters at the Hercules Gallery. Our curator would no longer allow me to do that today. But I never broke anything.”
