Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla have started their stay in Rwanda. They were received at Kigali airport.

Prince Charles (73) and Duchess Camilla (74) have started their royal visit to Rwanda. The Royal Air Force plane landed in the capital Kigali on Tuesday evening, where the two royals were welcomed by a delegation on the tarmac. Rwanda has been part of the Commonwealth of Nations since 2009 and is hosting the Confederation’s Heads of Government meeting this year. Charles and Camilla are the first members of the royal family ever to visit the East African country.

The head of the Commonwealth of Nations, Queen Elizabeth II (96), has never been to Rwanda herself and is represented there by her heir to the throne, Charles, and his wife. Charles was also appointed Chair of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting at the last meeting in London in 2018. The meeting was actually scheduled for 2020, but due to the corona pandemic, the date had to be postponed twice.

Charles and Camilla have that on their agenda in Rwanda

In addition to attending the conference, Charles and Camilla meet President Paul Kagame and his wife Jeanette. Also on the program is a visit to a wildlife sanctuary and a meeting with students who are being sponsored by a royal fund. At the end of their trip, the royal couple hosts a dinner for the Heads of Government of the Commonwealth on behalf of the Queen. Commenting on his trip to Rwanda, Charles said: “My wife and I are very much looking forward to meeting the Commonwealth Heads of State and Government and being able to visit Rwanda for the first time.”
