The relationship between Prince Charles and Prince Harry suffered significantly in the past year 2021. The fronts between father and son seem to have hardened at least since the famous Oprah interview. It is all the more surprising that the heir to the throne now finds extraordinarily praiseworthy words for his youngest in an essay for an American magazine.

It has become a rarity for Prince Charles, 73, to say a word about his son, Prince Harry, 37. Too much has happened since the surprising withdrawal of his youngest offspring and his wife, Duchess Meghan, 40, from royal duties. Last but not least, the sensational interview between the two of them with US talk show queen Oprah Winfrey, 67, in March 2021 deepened the gap that had already formed. Harry’s statements in the following documentary “The Me You Can’t See” about his father led to what seemed like a rupture for a long time. But now Charles surprises with an unexpected praise for the renegade offspring.

Prince Charles: “As a father I am proud …”

In an essay for the American magazine “Newsweek” he not only expresses his admiration for the commitment of his elder Prince William, 39, but also emphasizes Harry’s charitable work. “As a father, I am proud that my sons face this threat [des Klimawandels] have recognized, “he writes.

First, the 73-year-old talks about his firstborn’s commitment: “Recently, my older son William created the prestigious Earthshot Prize to create incentives for change and to help repair our planet over the next 10 years by he identifies technologies that can make a difference – and invests in them. ” But his “problem child” also receives a deeper appreciation: “My younger son Harry passionately emphasized the effects of climate change, especially in relation to Africa, and obliged his charity to be net zero.”

The heir to the throne wants to heal wounds – for two reasons

Warm words that come as a surprise after all the harsh comments made by his youngest in public. It seems that, despite the repeated attacks by the Sussexes on the British royal family, Charles remains determined to heal the wounds and to get closer to his son.

Charles is probably doing two things: On the one hand, like every father and grandfather, he wants to create family peace. So far, he has not even been allowed to hold his US-born granddaughter Lilibet Diana in his arms. Due to the corona pandemic, there have been no personal encounters so far. On the other hand, he acts as heir to the throne, who sees the reputation of the royal family damaged, especially in Harry’s adopted home America. There is a lot of sympathy there with the Sussexes.

“At the beginning of a new year there is not a moment to lose”

The well-being of the coming generations is important to him, as Charles emphasizes – and cleverly incorporates the personal component as father and grandfather: “The eyes of our children and grandchildren judge us. Let us be the generation that ‘can’. And does. At the beginning of a new year there is not a moment to lose. ” This apparently also applies to the efforts of the Prince of Wales to act before the platinum anniversary celebrations of his mother Queen Elizabeth, 95 – and to shake hands with his estranged son and daughter-in-law in an unexpected public gesture.
