(dpa) Britain’s Prince Charles wants a stronger commitment to the UK’s old growth forests and trees. As part of a new project in honor of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, 96, the 73-year-old called for the UK’s historic natural habitat to be refreshed, according to the PA news agency.
“These are precious, dwindling assets that support biodiversity and provide the finest material for craftsmen,” the Prince of Wales said in a video message presenting a directory of ancient forests and trees dedicated to the Queen on the occasion of her 70th jubilee. These treasures must be preserved for future generations.
Charles is patron of the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) initiative, which encourages citizens to plant a tree on the occasion of the throne jubilee and thus create a legacy in honor of the Queen (motto: “plant a tree for the jubilee”).
In keeping with the 70th anniversary of the throne, the new natural directory consists of 70 old forests and 70 trees. These include the apple tree, which is said to have prompted the mathematician Isaac Newton in the English county of Lincolnshire to ask why apples always fall directly on the ground.
