Prince Charles did not only find the partner who is a rock in the surf for him with his second marriage. Even during his marriage to Princess Diana, his current wife Camilla was apparently an indispensable support. An old jewelry engraving is supposed to prove this.

Since 2005, Prince Charles, 73, has seemed secure in a relationship that was not allowed to exist in his younger years. Nine years after the divorce from Princess Diana, †36, he was finally able to marry Duchess Camilla, 74, the woman who had never let go of him even after his marriage to young Lady Spencer. He is said to have called her “companion and helper” back in the 1980s.

Prince Charles: Engraving Reveals Camilla’s Importance to His Life

The nickname used as a metaphor for this potentially meaningful “honorary title” was “Girl Friday,” Vanity Fair editor and historian Sally Bedell Smith claims on the Royally Obsessed podcast. The English term stands for the description of an all-rounder who has everything under control and is therefore an indispensable support. Apparently Camilla Parker Bowles, who was already married in her first marriage, continued to offer the heir to the throne support and security even after the official end of their hopeless liaison.

Bracelet becomes evidence

Before marrying Diana, Queen Elizabeth’s eldest son, 95, is said to have given his ex-girlfriend a memento of their special relationship. “It was a very simple bracelet, a small gold bracelet with a blue plaque on it,” says Bedell, who also reveals the mysterious engraving on it. “It just said ‘GF’ and ‘GF’ meant ‘Girl Friday’. That’s what he called her jokingly. It just meant that she was sort of his companion, his helper.”

Camilla would have liked a different interpretation of the term: “It could also have meant that she was his Friday girl.” Not exactly a flattering attribute for a self-confident woman who certainly didn’t want to fit into a daily changing circle of friends. But the historian warns: “‘Girl Friday’ usually refers to someone who is a ‘jack of all trades’. She could help him with things and she was kind of reliable.”

But another meaning could also be considered. The “GF” could also stand for “Gladys and Fred”. Nicknames Charles and Camilla gave each other as early as their twenties when they became closer. The two names referred to characters from the British radio comedy show The Goon Show.

Prince Charles doesn’t just make Camilla happy

The truth probably lies somewhere in between. Nevertheless, the piece of jewelery can be interpreted as a sign of the deep bond between the Prince of Wales and his current wife, as time has shown. However, there is one thing to think about: before tying the knot with Diana, he is said to have not only given Camilla a bracelet as a farewell gift. Dozens of them are said to have been presented to special people in the outgoing bachelor’s life, according to Bedell, one of them to Lady “Kanga” Tryon, † 49.

He is said to have had a fling with the Australian during his student days. Spicy: The affair is said to have taken place parallel to the then still smoldering love affair with Camilla, who is now engaged. A small youthful sin that the ducal couple of Cornwall should have shelved after all the ups and downs of their forbidden love.
