They take it easy: Prince Edward and Sophie von Wessex can apparently still laugh at the brilliant Oprah interview that Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan gave.

The conversation with the talk master has been a topic of conversation since it was broadcast in March 2021. After all, Prince Harry, 36, and Duchess Meghan, 39, raised serious allegations against the British royal family. There was talk of racism and failure to help with the Duchess’ depression and suicidal thoughts. While the entire family first met at the funeral of Prince Philip, † 99, it was observed with eagle eyes how the relatives behave after his violent statements to Harry, two family members seem to want to know nothing about it.

Countess Sophie and Prince Edward take Oprah interview calmly

When asked in their first major interview since their wedding in 1999 whether they had seen the interview in question, Prince Edward, 57, and wife Sophie von Wessex, 56, replied with a laugh, “Oprah who?” and “Which interview?” With this, the son and daughter-in-law of Queen Elizabeth, 95, show not only a good dose of serenity but also humor.

Only a few weeks had passed since speaking with Oprah Winfrey, 67, when Prince Harry returned home for the memorial service for his beloved grandfather. Sophie von Wessex found it “nice” to have a long chat with the emigrant after the ceremony, she reveals.

Sophie von Wessex: “Everything stood still”

The couple stood by the monarch after the loss of their husband in April. The funeral service took place in the closest family circle in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle and, according to Prince Edward, was “extremely strange” due to the strict Corona restrictions. About a month later, the grief is still deep. With tears in her eyes, she remembers the moment during the ceremony “when everything stood still” in an interview for “The Telegraph”. “It was when the soldiers were ordered to turn their weapons,” says the Countess of the poignant moment when the military bowed their heads and turned their rifles on the Quadrangle of Windsor Castle before the Prince Philip-designed Land Rover drove up with his coffin. “Everything stood still,” said the 56-year-old. The fact that only a few guests attended the funeral service only increased the intensity, she explains.

“It was very moving to be there because it was suddenly so intimate,” agrees her husband. But it was particularly moving “to see Her Majesty alone”. The fact that the funeral took place without any great fanfare would have been entirely in the interests of the Duke of Edinburgh, she says.

“We’re still a family”

One of the toughest years lies behind the Royal Family, which has certainly welded at least some members even closer together. So the Duchess closes the interview with the emotional words: “We are still a family, no matter what happens, we will always be.”
