At the end of the 90s, Prince Frederik was in a relationship with the Danish singer Maria Montell, who had to go to therapy after the love affair. A nice coincidence, however, brings her closer to Princess Mary – and her almost royal roots.
“I had the pleasure of getting a tour of Kronborg with Mayte Garcia, who was married to pop star Prince from 1996 to 2000… You could say that I was also with a prince during that time,” jokes Maria Montell, 53 , on Instagram. The Danish singer is alluding to her relationship with Prince Frederik, 54, in the late 1990s.
Now she’s returning to her near-royal roots with her girlfriend, who was actually involved with the late “Purple Rain” singer. Because the US choreographer Mayte Garcia, 48, had an appointment with Frederik’s current wife Princess Mary, 50, on August 18, 2022 in the Danish city of Odense. On social media, Maria then reminisced about her former relationship with the Danish heir to the throne – for which she had to undergo therapy.

On August 18, Princess Mary and Maria’s friend Mayte were invited to the opening of the Odense Flower Festival, which in 2022 has the theme “Fairytale Garden”. Together they were allowed to baptize a new rose “with a very special story”, the royal family informed somewhat mysteriously. Before that, Montell and Garcia paid a visit to Kronborg Castle.
At the time, Prince wrote a song about his beloved Mayte, according to Frederik’s ex-girlfriend on Instagram. She continues to joke about a photo of herself and the American at Kronborg Castle: “I didn’t get a song, but at least I lived in a castle with a man without platform shoes”.
After relationship with Frederik in therapy
In 2019, Maria Montell gave a big interview to the Danish newspaper “Seg og Hör” on the occasion of her 50th birthday. The singer also revealed that the constant reporting during her relationship with Prince Frederik put a lot of strain on her. Suddenly she had become a target, she had to read unpleasant things about herself again and again. “He’s a part of my life and it was a fantastic time. Of course it was exhausting when it overshadowed what I actually do,” explained the 53-year-old.

In the end, she had to seek the help of a psychologist to get her life back on track – which she did. The musician has been married to director Tomas Villum Jensen, 51, since 2006. Maria only has positive words for Frederik. “I can see that as you get older, you really dare to stand up for yourself,” Montell wrote in an open letter in the newspaper “Alt for Damerne” around 2018 for the prince’s 50th birthday.
