Prince George, future king: when will he assume royal duties?

Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, have a clear priority in life: their three children George, Charlotte and Louis. Firmly determined to preserve them, they organized their lives so that their childhood was as normal as possible. In an exclusive interview given to our colleagues at Peoplethe author of The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy (The Birth of a King: Charles III and the Modern Monarchy), Robert Hardman, gave details on how Prince George is prepared for his future role as king, citing a Kensington Palace source cited in his book: “George should not be expected to take on royal duties until he is in his twenties.

In this sense, George’s preparation is very different from that experienced by King Charles III. According to Robert Hardman, he had no say in the matter: everything was decided for him. However, Prince William enjoyed greater autonomy, for example being allowed to choose the university he wanted to study at himself. The attentive dad intends to offer the same freedom of choice to his son, whether with regard to his future or the roles he is likely to occupy – exclusively on a voluntary basis. As Robert Hardman further explained: “Even before he was made a page at the coronation, William and Catherine made a point of asking him if he felt comfortable, as he was clearly the youngest. It turned out he was enthusiastic.”

A modern royal couple

This major role that Prince William and his wife play in preparing their son for his future role is new, testifying to the modernity of the couple. As Robert Hardman further explains: “While Queen Elizabeth played a major role in preparing Prince William for his future duties (William visited his grandmother at the neighboring school, Eton College, for teas and discussions), it should not be expect the same to be true of King Charles when it comes to guiding George.” On the contrary, it is George’s parents who take matters into their own hands, to ensure that their little prince is not disturbed by what awaits him. Perhaps King Charles III will play a more important role in the future, but only when Prince George is mature enough to think seriously about his future role.
