Prince Hamzah and Princess Basmah are happy about their offspring

It is the sixth child together for the Jordanian royal couple. They are already parents to four daughters Zein, 9, Noor, 7, Badiya, 5, Nafisa, 4, and son Hussein, 2. Prince Hamzah already has Prince Hamzah from his previous marriage to his second cousin Princess Noor bint Asem bin Nayef the 14-year-old daughter Haya. The two divorced in 2009 after six years of marriage. On January 12, 2012, King Abdullah’s half-brother, 60, married Canadian-born commoner Basmah Al-Atoum.

Prince Hamzah under house arrest

Hamzah made headlines in April last year after the BBC released a video message in which the prince claimed he had been accused of a coup attempt and was under house arrest as a result. In the five-minute video, he accused the government of corruption, incompetence and harassment. King Abdulla indicated a few days later that things had settled between him and his brother and that he was “under my protection in his palace”.

The monarch stripped Hamzah of his title as crown prince in 2004, having appointed him in 1999 after the death of his father, King Hussein, † 69. He had decided to “liberate him from the constraints of the position of crown prince”. He wants to give him “the freedom to work and to take on any task or responsibility” that he entrusts to him. The current heir to the throne is Abdullah’s eldest son Hussein, 27.
