On November 16, 2010, the palace announced that Prince William and the then Kate Middleton had gotten engaged during a trip to Kenya in October. The romantic photos of Diana’s deep blue sapphire ring on Catherine’s hand went around the world. “It was new to me,” Prince Harry now reveals in his book and explains: “During the entire time in Lesotho [Binnenstaat im südlichen Afrika] he had [Prinz William] it’s never mentioned once.”

The exiting royal remembers the flood of media that accompanied this happy news, writes: “The newspapers published flowery stories about the moment when I realized that Willy and Kate were a good match […] and [ich] I had therefore decided to give Willy the ring that I had inherited from Mummy, the legendary sapphire. A moment of affection between brothers. Complete nonsense.” According to Harry, none of this ever happened.
“I never gave Willy the ring”
Paul Burrell also took up this rumor in the documentary “The Diana Story,” claiming: “Harry is closed [William] said: ‘Wouldn’t it be appropriate if she got mommy’s ring?'” The Duke makes it clear in “Spare”: “I never gave Willy the ring because I couldn’t do that. He already owned it.”
Prince William “asked for it” after Diana’s death and Harry agreed to forego it, the memoir continues. This makes it clear once and for all: Catherine’s engagement ring was not actually intended for Duchess Meghan, 42, but apparently always for William’s future wife.
