Prince Harry is due to testify in a London court in June. It is about the supposedly illegal procurement of information by a newspaper.

Prince Harry (38) is expected to testify before the High Court in London in the summer. As reported by British media such as “Hello!” magazine, the son of King Charles III. (74) appeared as a witness in the damages proceedings against the newspaper publisher Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN). Harry is part of a class action lawsuit accusing those responsible of illegally obtaining information and thus violating the privacy of the plaintiffs. Among other things, telephones were tapped. Harry’s participation stems from a statement by attorney Julian Santos at a court hearing on Wednesday: All witnesses would testify in person; none of the plaintiffs would request testimony via video call, Santos said.

In addition to Prince Harry, other prominent people are among the applicants, including music icon Elton John (76), actress Liz Hurley (57) and the heirs of the late musician George Michael (1963-2016). The media company MGN includes well-known titles such as “The Mirror”, “Sunday Mirror” or the “Sunday People”. The defendant group of companies vehemently rejects the allegations and also argues that deadlines were not met, which is why the lawsuit must be dismissed.

In a nearly identical case against the publisher Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the tabloids “Daily Mail” and “Mail on Sunday”, Harry surprisingly appeared at a multi-day hearing in the British capital last week.

Those are the accusations

In October, the law firm Hamlins, which represents Prince Harry, said in a statement that the plaintiffs had become victims of “heinous criminal activities”. In addition to alleged eavesdropping devices, the “Daily Mail” had private detectives on the clients, wiretapped telephone calls and bribed police officers, according to the allegations. The defendant also obtained medical information and bank documents illegally. These activities are only “the tip of the iceberg”.

Prince Harry’s wife, Duchess Meghan (41), with whom he moved to the United States in 2020, also sued the newspaper group after a letter from her to her father was published. She won the court case in December last year. The Mail on Sunday then printed an apology.
