On September 6, 1997, Prince Harry had to say goodbye to his late mother Princess Diana in Westminster Abbey – how difficult this walk was for him is now emotionally described in his autobiography “Spare”.

It’s probably the worst thing a child has to go through: burying a parent. When Princess Diana died in a Paris hospital at the age of just 36 as a result of a car accident, she left behind two grieving children. Prince Harry, 38, was only 12 years old at the time, his big brother Prince William, 40, was 15 at the time. Two young children who had to say goodbye far too early and who were strongly influenced by the death of their famous mother into adulthood.

Prince Harry: Diana’s funeral was traumatizing

Of course, the circumstances were even more difficult for the two, as the whole world was watching and wanted to say goodbye to the “Queen of Hearts”. William and Harry could not calmly say their goodbyes to Diana, but had to keep their emotions under control and their composure at a public funeral service on September 6, 1997 at Westminster Abbey. Certainly traumatizing for children who have just lost their beloved mother. Even for an adult like King Charles, 74, this walk must have been very difficult, but for a 12-year-old to lose his composure at his own mum’s funeral is all too understandable. This is now described in a highly emotional manner in “Spare”, Prince Harry’s autobiography. The work accidentally appeared five days early in Spanish bookstores – the explosive contents of which are of course already going around the world.

Collapse at Westminster Abbey

So does Prince Harry’s incredibly sad description of how he really felt at his mother’s funeral. In public at the time, young Harry appeared incredibly strong and composed, but in reality the child was just in great shock and collapsed. “My body spasmed, my chin dropped and I began to sob uncontrollably into my hands. I was ashamed of having violated the family ethos, but I could no longer contain it,” the Duke of Sussex wrote. Keeping your composure, being strong – not possible for the twelve-year-old back then. Understandably.

There are many myths surrounding the death of Princess Diana – even Prince Harry was convinced at the time that his mother had “staged an accident” to escape her “miserable” life in the spotlight.

Prince Harry: He regrets the last phone call

Duchess Meghan’s husband, 41, also writes that he was asked to write a “farewell letter” to his late mother. In that moment he understood that he had lost her forever. Harry also thinks back to the last phone call with sadness. The brothers played with their cousins, were busy. “So I kept the conversation short. Impatient to keep playing, I cut her off on the phone.” To this day, Prince Harry wishes he could have apologized to his mother, but sadly he never did as she passed away the next day.

When you hear these words, you feel incredibly sorry for the redhead and you want to hug him and just tell him: Princess Diana, as a loving mother, was well aware that her two boys just wanted to play at that moment, but of course loved her more than anything.
