Liz Garbus, director of the “Harry & Meghan” documentary, rejects the claims that Buckingham Palace was not asked for comment in an interview.

There are a few words that could be seen in the first few seconds of Prince Harry, 38, and Duchess Meghan, 41, explosive Netflix documentary – and then caused a lot of discussion. “Members of the Royal Family declined to comment on the content of the series,” one saw at the beginning of “Harry & Meghan” faded in. A few hours after the publication, the British news agency PA reported, citing royal circles, that the palace had not been asked for a statement.

Liz Garbus, 52, the Oscar-winning director of the documentary, now rejects this accusation in an interview with the US edition of “Vanity Fair” and speaks of “alleged mind games”.

Not only the content of the Netflix documentary – which documented the romance of the Sussexes, their war with the press, the difficulties with the royal family and their exit – has been highly explosive. The work on the documentary and the consequences have already caused a stir. The first choice of the Sussexes, director Garrett Bradley, 37, is said to have left the project in advance due to “sensitive moments”, according to the US celebrity portal “Page Six” from production circles.

But Liz Garbus also had differences with Meghan and Harry, speaking in the “Vanity Fair” interview of “different goals” that “both parties” are said to have pursued. According to Garbus, Harry and Meghan are said to have viewed the “documentary as their love story”. She, on the other hand, was keen to connect these private details to “larger historical issues.”

In retrospect, the American film producer also describes the documentary filming as a sometimes surreal exercise in the “alleged mind games of the palace,” as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had told her.

“Buckingham Palace, for example, has claimed that we [für die Doku-Serie] didn’t ask for a comment even though we did,” Liz Garbus clarifies, denying previous accusations to the contrary. “They did it to discredit us. And by discrediting us, they can discredit the content of the show,” the director continues, adding that her team “lived some of those moments.”
