After the latest changes in the Danish royal family, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan should be anything but enthusiastic: will their children not get any new titles after all?

The Danish royal family is currently causing a tremor in the European monarchy: after Queen Margrethe, 82, suddenly announced on September 28, 2022 that the children of her son Prince Joachim, 53, would be deprived of their prince and princess titles from January next year , a murmur goes through various royal families. Not only because those affected make angry statements and shoot sharply at Margrethe – some royals could now also tremble for their titles. And not just in the Danish royal family.

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan want titles for their children

Above all, Prince Harry, 38, and Duchess Meghan, 41, should not like the Danish Queen’s decision at all. Although the Sussexes promised after their retirement as senior royals in early 2020 that they would no longer publicly use their titles as “Royal Highnesses”, Harry and Meghan are very happy to use their duke and duchess titles when it comes to their projects.

Since the death of Queen Elizabeth, †96, her children Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1, have also had a good chance of being made prince and princess by her grandfather King Charles, 73, and even the title HRH [His/Her Royal Highness; zu Deutsch: Seine/Ihre Königliche Hoheit] to wear officially. The signs were not bad in the days after the state funeral of the record monarch, but the bang from his Danish colleague could have made Charles think again.

King Charles also wants to slim down the royal family

After all, the new king is known to be a fan of slimming down the monarchy and wants to do things differently from his mother. That means: save costs, reconsider titles and positions or assign them differently. Set the monarchy for the future. That is also Queen Margrethe’s plan. “The Queen’s decision is consistent with similar adjustments that other royal houses have made in various ways over the past few years,” the court said, referring among others to King Carl Gustaf’s, 76, changeover in October 2019.

The press department of the Danish palace also emphasized that the Queen’s decision “creates a framework [möchte]in which the four grandchildren are far more empowered to direct their lives, unconstrained by the special considerations and obligations that formal institutional affiliation entails with royalty.”

An approach that Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan could definitely like. Again and again, the two emphasize how difficult it was for them in the royal family and that their children should grow up as normally as possible – without royal rules and restrictions. Nevertheless, the titles are important to them. A contrast that could also anger Charles and cause him to rethink.
