Now it’s out: Prince Harry makes the break with his brother Prince William official in his book “Spare”. There is talk of nasty wars of words and even fisticuffs. After an escalated argument, the younger man even had to see a therapist because he couldn’t speak to his wife Meghan.

In recent years, there has been speculation about the relationship between Prince Harry, 38, and Prince William, 40. The Sussexes’ exit from royal operations in early 2020 left scorched earth behind. That was clearly noticeable. But how much the decision of the second-born son of King Charles, 74, and his wife Duchess Meghan, 41, created a gap between the siblings, who were once perceived as devoted, only now appears in the younger’s long-awaited memoirs.

Prince Harry: “It all happened so quickly”

The scandal that shook Harry to the core and made him get help from a therapist is said to have happened in 2019. William had allegedly asked him to meet. The royals’ tempers were heated. Shortly before, the “Mail on Sunday” had published a letter that Meghan had written to her father Thomas Markle, 78, after her dream wedding in May 2018.

William came to the subject without much preamble. “Meg is difficult,” he said. “She’s rude. She’s rude. She has upset half the staff,” insisted the older man. Looking back, Harry accuses him of parroting after the press. “‘Duchess Difficult’, all that crap.” The 38-year-old recalls that his brother did not let him speak and even insulted him. He left the living room. But William immediately followed him into the kitchen.

The attempt to de-escalate failed. “Willy, I can’t talk to you when you’re in this mood,” Harry tried to stop the older man. “He put the water glass down, gave me another swear word, and then he attacked me. It all happened so quickly,” the royal describes the threatening situation. “He grabbed my collar, tearing my necklace, and pushed me to the ground.” He landed on the dog’s bowl, which splintered under his back, he recalls. He sustained cut injuries.

“You don’t have to tell Meg about this”

After a brief daze, Harry ordered his brother out of the house. William had asked him to fight back calmly. But Harry asked him again to leave. The heir to the throne then left the room, but stayed in the living room for a while, only to pause briefly on his way to the front door: “You don’t have to tell Meg anything about this.”

Emergency call to a therapist

Harry promised – but his soul needed help. His wife, the person he trusted most, was not allowed to know anything about the quarrel, which had escalated beyond measure. “I looked at my phone. A promise is a promise, I said to myself.” So he thought of the closest person who could help him in times of need. “I needed to talk to someone. So I called my therapist.”

Arriving at Prince Harry's wedding

A measure that apparently cost him to overcome. “I apologized for the disturbance and told her I didn’t have anyone else to call.” He described to her what had happened just a few moments before, still completely disturbed. There had been many physical arguments in the siblings’ lives, he explained to her agitatedly. But this felt different.

“The therapist instructed me to take deep breaths. She asked me to describe the scene several times. Each time it seemed like a bad dream.” Nevertheless, his psychologist’s strategy apparently had an effect. “Each time I got a little calmer,” Harry said. He was proud not to have hit his brother back, he told her.

“I couldn’t lie to her”

Despite the inner turmoil, Prince Harry had shown mental strength. And also proved it in the aftermath of the unpleasant event. He kept quiet about Meghan, as he had promised William despite his anger. Nevertheless, his wife tracked him down. “Haz, what are those scratches and bruises on your back?” Meghan asked him shortly thereafter when he came out of the shower. “I couldn’t lie to her,” admits Harry. She was not surprised and not angry. “She was just terribly sad.”
