Prince Harry’s surprise trip: the Duke of Sussex in the footsteps of his father

On Monday August 22, 2022, Prince Harry appeared in a photo shared by Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s Twitter account. He went to a symbolic place, visited two months earlier by his father.

  • Prince Harry is on a trip to Rwanda, a few days after visiting Mozambique.
  • He came to represent African Parks, a network of NGOs of which he is the president.
  • Meghan Markle’s husband then visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial, two months after his father.

While he was seen in Mozambique on Wednesday August 17, 2022, Prince Harry decided to continue his tour in Africa. Very discretly, Meghan Markle’s husband chose to travel to Rwanda. A country that is particularly close to his heart since he has already been there on several occasions. In a photo shared Monday, August 22, by President Paul Kagame’s Twitter account, Prince Harry appeared smiling alongside the leader of Rwanda.

If the reasons for his trip to Africa were not known until then, President Kagame revealed the reasons for his arrival in Rwanda. He explained on Twitter that he was there “as part of his work as President of African Parks“. Indeed, the Duke of Sussex has been president of this NGO since the end of 2017. He works on a daily basis to the protection of national parks in Africa. His visit to Rwanda led to an agreement between the government and the NGO for “manage Akagera and Nyungwe national parks“.

Prince Harry goes to a memorial, two months after his father

After his meeting with President Kagame, Prince Harry continued his day by going to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. This place charged with emotions and inaugurated in 2004 is the final resting place of more than 250,000 victims of the genocide. Last June, Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles visited the same memorial. At that time, the Queen’s son was present in Rwanda to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Summitorganized for the first time in Kigali.

Prince William’s brother has a busy schedule in the coming weeks. At the beginning of September, he will travel to the United Kingdom where he will be joined by Meghan Markle. On September 5, the couple will attend the One Young World Summit in Manchester. After that, they will fly to Germany to follow the organization of the Invictus Games from Dusseldorf. Finally, they will return to England to take part in the WellChild Awardon September 8.
