After Queen Margrethe took the titles away from Prince Joachim’s children, he made no secret of the fact that he was angry at his mother’s decision. It also seems to put additional strain on the already fragile relationship with his brother Prince Frederik.

On Wednesday, September 28, 2022, Queen Margrethe, 82, issued an official statement announcing that her grandchildren Prince Nikolai, 23, Prince Felix, 20, Princess Athena, 10, and Prince Henrik, 13, will be born in January 2023 year to strip them of their prince and princess titles. A little later, Prince Joachim, 53, vented his anger because he was said to have been informed of his mother’s drastic decision shortly before. “I was informed five days in advance,” he told Danish newspaper BT. “Telling my kids that on New Year’s Day they will be stripped of their identities. It makes me very, very sad to see them getting upset and not realizing what’s going on over their heads,” he continued.

His ex-wife – and mother of Nikolai and Felix – Countess Alexandra of Frederiksborg was stunned. This streamlining of the monarchy still seems to be making waves in the Danish royal family. Because now Joachim expresses himself again and emphasizes how difficult his relationship with his brother Prince Frederik, 54, is now.

Prince Joachim’s relationship with Crown Prince Frederik is ‘complicated’

It’s no secret that the relationship between Prince Joachim and his older brother Frederik is rather frosty. The two seem to have lost touch with each other for a long time. The brothers have only been seen together at public events in recent months – and these were also rare. The reason for the tense relationship is said to be that Joachim feels great displeasure because he is number two in line to the throne. The fact that his children are now deprived of their titles should hardly minimize this feeling. It is therefore not surprising that royal expert Jacob Heinel Jensen expects a serious family crisis in the royal family. “You’ve done away with that branch of the family for several years, and now you’re sending the kids out into the desert,” he argued recently.

And Joachim is now expressing himself again and underlines with his words that the gap within the family is apparently increasing. Both he and his wife Princess Marie, 46, emphasized to “BT” that their relationship with Frederik and his wife Princess Mary, 50, was “complicated”. In addition, Queen Margrethe has not contacted her second child since the bang. That also seems to disappoint the 53-year-old. After all, it’s “also a family matter,” he says.
