A difficult time lies behind the Danish royal family, which is likely to keep Prince Joachim and Princess Marie busy. The traditional New Year’s celebrations could be correspondingly tense after their children’s titles were withdrawn.

2022 was not an easy year for the Danish royal family: On September 28, 2022, Queen Margrethe, 82, announced that the children of her second child, Prince Joachim, 53, would no longer be allowed to bear their prince and princess titles from 2023. After this announcement, there was a break: Princess Marie, 46, and her husband in particular, publicly expressed their anger that the withdrawal of the title had not been clarified with them in advance.

In the meantime, the monarch has apologized, it is said that there was a discussion between her and her son. The royal family also made public appearances together. Nevertheless, the crisis does not seem to have been averted yet. The family will be reunited shortly: How will Joachim and Marie be welcomed by the other royals?

Title deprivation of Prince Joachim’s children comes into effect soon

Joachim and his wife are currently enjoying their Christmas vacation, but the couple is expected to attend the traditional New Year’s reception at Amalienborg Palace – on the day when the title withdrawal officially comes into effect. From then on, Joachim’s sons Prince Nikolai, 23, Prince Felix, 20, and Prince Henrik, 13, will instead become Counts of Monpezat, daughter Athena, 10, will bear the title of Countess of Monpezat. It is therefore conceivable that Marie and her husband are looking forward to the family reunion with mixed feelings.

Will Joachim and Marie be received in a similar way to the throne jubilee?

A shattered picture began to emerge in November when the Danish royals met to celebrate Queen Margrethe’s 50th jubilee. It was the first meeting after the title decision. The family members did not appear together at the time, the regent waved alone from the balcony. “Relationships are still strained,” Jacob Heinel Jensen, Royal correspondent for Danish newspaper BT, told Gala.fr. Nevertheless, according to “Billed Bladet”, Joachim and Marie were warmly welcomed by those present when they arrived at the town hall square.

In the meantime, a few weeks have passed, and heated tempers may have calmed down. The greeting at the New Year’s reception may also be warm. What is certain is that on January 1, 2023, all eyes will be on the Danish royal family.
