Queen Margrethe gave another New Year’s reception. Of course, Frederik and Mary shone at her side. But Prince Joachim also showed up – and quite unexpectedly.

In less than two weeks thanks Queen Margrethe, 83, officially steps down as monarch of Denmark. Prince Frederik, 55, is currently preparing to take the throne. Before she leaves office, the regent still has a lot to celebrate: Since January 1, 2024, she has been hosting her last New Year’s receptions as monarch. There was also a reception on Thursday, January 4th – but the last one. In addition to Margrethe, the soon-to-be king and his wife Princess Mary, 51, also appeared at Christiansborg Palace. However, Prince Joachim, 54, made a real surprise appearance.

Prince Joachim attends Queen Margrethe’s last New Year’s reception

The 83-year-old’s youngest son was not previously listed in the palace’s official program. The Danish newspaper “BT” has a picture of Joachim getting out of a car at around 9:00 a.m. in full uniform. On January 1st, the royal, who works as a defense attaché in Washington DC, took part in the so-called New Year’s treatment at Amalienborg Palace with his wife Princess Marie, 47. It is quite possible that he also stood by his mother at this event because it was, after all, a historic event: Queen Margrethe held her very last New Year’s reception as monarch – and sealed it with her last carriage ride.

Queen Margrethe takes her last carriage ride

The palace uploaded an emotional video of Queen Margrethe to its official Instagram account. It shows her in her golden carriage, smiling and waving to the crowds. The clip is set to the song “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by “The Verve”.

“This morning Her Majesty the Queen rode in a golden carriage through snow-covered Copenhagen from Amalienborg Palace to Christiansborg Palace, where the last New Year’s carriage ride of the year takes place. The golden carriage from 1840 is the most beautiful carriage in the royal family and will be used for the traditional New Year’s ride at Christiansborg Palace,” writes the court about the moving photos.
