After the death of his father Constantine II of Greece, Prince Pavlos is looking for a new home in his old homeland – and thus speculates on a comeback in Greece.

Pavlos of Greece, 55, will never ascend the throne after all, the Greek monarchy was abolished in 1973. Nevertheless, he would like to become more visible in his home country. Can royal supporters even look forward to a comeback of the crown prince in Greece?

Sad circumstances brought Pavlos back to Athens from Greece earlier this year. The death of his father Constantine of Greece, † 82, on January 10, 2023 brought the royal family back together. And before long, the Greek people will be seeing more of the 55-year-old again.

Pavlos and wife Marie-Chantal of Greece, 54, with whom he has five children, have commuted between their two homes in New York and London for many years. But for some time the family has been looking for a property in their Greek homeland. “It could be in Athens, depending on what we find,” the royal confirmed in an interview with “Point de Vue” at the end of February. “You will see me more here in Greece,” he promised.

Comeback in Greece?

According to “Tatler” journalist Christos Zampounis, rumors that the former heir to the throne was planning a return to his homeland were already circulating at the beginning of the year. While he was commenting on Konstantin’s funeral service live from a TV studio, the moderator interrupted the program with an urgent text message. “Pavlos returns to Greece and settles permanently in Athens,” it said. “I’m not so sure about that,” Zampounis replied. He elaborates: “He works at Ortelius Capital Partners in New York, his wife owns a children’s clothing company. One of their five children is still in school. It seems to me that it would be practically difficult for them to move.”

After this news spread like wildfire in the media, despite Zampouni’s doubts, the family themselves spoke up. “The rumors are fabricated. This is an emotional time for the Queen and her family and they will be spending more time together during their stay in Athens, but that’s all,” a Royals spokeswoman said.

“Society has learned to get by without them”

It is unlikely that the monarchy would be reinstated in Greece. Nevertheless, the ratings during Constantine’s funeral and the great media hype about it showed “the power of this institution,” the expert notes. However, Pavlos’ return to the country on the Balkan Peninsula will only be of a private and business nature. “Most of Greek society learned without them [die Royals] get by and vice versa,” says Zampounis.
