Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, has died at 99

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died this Friday, April 9, 2021 at the age of 99. Military engagement and meeting with Princess Elizabeth

In 1939, when he was only 18, he enlisted in the Royal Navy. In July of the same year, he began a correspondence with Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of King George VI and heir to the throne of Great Britain. After serving during WWII in the Mediterranean and Pacific fleets, Prince Philip obtained permission to marry Princess Elizabeth. He will then have to renounce his Greek and Danish royal titles and convert to Anglicanism before the official announcement of the engagement. He takes the name of his English great-grandparents and becomes Philip Mountbatten. After only five months of engagement, he married Princess Elizabeth on November 20, 1947. Upon his marriage, he attained the status of Royal Highness and was named Duke of Edinburgh by his stepfather, King George VI.

Royal career and descent

On the death of King George VI in 1952, Princess Elizabeth became Queen of England and Prince Philip left active service after reaching the rank of Commander in the Royal Navy.
