The late Prince Philip was apparently not taken with the high-profile interview of his grandson Prince Harry with Oprah.

Just a few weeks before the death of Prince Philip (1921-2021), Prince Harry (36) and his wife, Duchess Meghan (39), caused a sensation with an explosive interview with talk legend Oprah Winfrey (67). Philip, who died on April 9 at the age of 99, apparently considered the conversation broadcast at the beginning of March to be “madness”. At least that’s what the author Gyles Brandreth (73, “Odd Boy Out”) claims the British tabloid “Daily Mail”.

Brandreth, whose book “Philip and Elizabeth: Portrait of a Marriage” was published in 2004, cites an insider who is not named. “I know from someone who was close to him that he thought Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey was ‘madness’ and that he believed that ‘nothing good will come of it’,” the paper quoted the author as saying.

People have to live as they see fit

At the same time, Philip was allegedly not angry with his grandson either. “That Meghan and Harry’s interview was broadcast while he was in the hospital didn’t bother him,” said Brandreth. However, Philip is said to have been concerned that the two, who had left the UK a few months earlier and moved to the US, were talking about private issues in public.

Philip had no problem with interviews per se, but one of his rules was not to talk about yourself in them. Brandreth knows that the royal shared this rule with his children and he assumes that he did the same with his grandchildren. However, Philip supported Harry so that he could do “his own thing”. The Royal told Brandreth: “People have to lead their lives as they see fit.”

Prince Philip is buried on April 17th. Harry will also be present, as the palace recently confirmed. The media from Great Britain and the USA had recently reported that Harry had allegedly already arrived in his home country. It had previously been said that he wanted to return as soon as possible to be with the Royal Family. Duchess Meghan, on the other hand, should not have traveled with them. However, that was expected. It was announced that her doctors advised pregnant Meghan not to travel.
