“My grandfather was an extraordinary man,” writes Prince William of Prince Philip. He will miss his role model very much.

Prince William (38) pays tribute to his late grandfather with very personal and emotional words. Prince Philip (1921-2021), husband of Queen Elizabeth II (94), died on April 9 at the age of 99 at Windsor Castle. The life of the Prince Consort was shaped “by service – for his country and the Commonwealth, for his wife and the Queen and for our family”, Prince William now writes on Instagram.

The 38-year-old, who is in second place in the British line of succession, says he is lucky to have not only had an enormous role model in Prince Philip. His “presence well into my adult life” was also important for Prince William, “both in good times and in difficult times”.

The “special memories” cannot be taken for granted

Prince William is also grateful that his wife, Duchess Kate (39), was able to spend so many years with the Prince Consort. The 38-year-old writes that he was always friendly towards the mother of three. He said he would never take for granted “the special memories my children had of their great-grandfather, who picked them up in his carriage, and of his infectious sense of adventure and his mischievous sense of humor.”

For his loving farewell words, Prince William published a photo of the Duke of Edinburgh showing him together with his great-grandson Prince George (7), William and Kate’s eldest son. In addition to him, the couple also have Princess Charlotte (5) and Prince Louis (2).

“My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation,” said Prince William in closing his touching post. “Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted us to do and will support the Queen for years to come. I will miss my grandfather, but I know he would have wanted us to continue with the work.”
